Fall in Dayton, Ohio
The Ultimate Guide to Fall in Dayton, Ohio: Things to Do, Places to Eat & Local Favorites
There’s something special about fall in Dayton, Ohio.
The humidity finally breaks, the leaves begin to turn along the Great Miami and Little Miami rivers, and weekends start filling up with pumpkin patches, festivals, football games, apple picking and hayrides. It’s the time of year when a quick trip for coffee can turn into a full morning out, and a simple Saturday afternoon can become a favorite fall tradition.
If you’re looking for things to do in Dayton this fall, there’s no shortage of options. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures, family-friendly activities, local restaurants, seasonal festivals or somewhere to take friends who are visiting from out of town, this guide has plenty of ideas to get you started.
Fall Festivals and Events Around Dayton
Fall is packed with community events throughout the Dayton area, and several local traditions return year after year.
One of the early-season favorites is Country Applefest in Lebanon, held September 26–27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. With more than 300 vendors and plenty of apple-themed activities, it’s an easy way to spend a fall weekend exploring downtown Lebanon and the fairgrounds.
In October, The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival in Waynesville takes over the village for a weekend of crafts, food and plenty of sauerkraut. The festival runs October 10–11, beginning at 9 a.m., and has become one of the area's most recognizable fall traditions.
For something a little more spooky, Oregon District Hauntfest brings costumes, live music and food trucks to one of Dayton's most popular entertainment districts.
As November arrives, the season begins to transition toward the holidays. Christmas in Historic Springboro brings three days of lights, crafts and a parade the weekend before Thanksgiving, while Centerville Uptown Holiday Weekend includes a concert, carriage rides and the tree lighting at Benham's Grove.
And if you want to start the Thanksgiving holiday with some movement, the Dayton Turkey Trot 5K takes place November 28 at 8:30 a.m.
Enjoy the Outdoors This Fall
One of the best things about fall in the Dayton area is how easy it is to get outside.
The Little Miami Scenic Trail is a great place for a fall walk or bike ride. Golden leaves, river views and cooler temperatures make it tempting to keep going for “just one more mile.”
The Great Miami River Trail is another local favorite, especially around sunset. A fall bike ride along the river can be one of the simplest ways to enjoy the changing season.
For a little more elevation, head to Miamisburg Mound. The climb includes 116 steps, but the view at the top makes the effort worthwhile when the surrounding trees are showing off their fall colors.
Caesar Creek State Park is another great choice for a fall day outside, with lake views and wooded trails that make it easy to spend several hours exploring.
And if you're looking for somewhere quieter, Cox Arboretum MetroPark is ideal for a slow fall morning or afternoon. Grab a coffee, take a walk and enjoy the leaves without needing much of a plan.
Pumpkin Patches, Orchards and Fall Traditions
Some of the best parts of fall are the traditions that come back every year.
Hidden Valley Orchards in Lebanon is a classic fall destination, with more than 60 acres featuring cider, cider donuts, hayrides and a waterfall.
In Springboro, Windmill Farm Market is known for its famously muddy adventure hayride, a fall tradition that has been part of the community since 1982.
Kleather's Pumpkin Patch, another Springboro tradition, is a family-run pumpkin stand known for its pumpkin carriage. It has been part of the community since 1976.
If you're looking for something a little different, add a corn maze at Lucas Brothers Farm to your fall bucket list.
And don't forget the simple things: visiting a farmers market on a Saturday morning, buying something from a local maker, picking out a fall candle or bringing a neighbor a homemade fall dessert.
Sometimes those are the moments that make the season feel like fall.
Slow Fall Mornings in Dayton
Not every fall activity needs to be an event.
Some of the best fall mornings are the ones with no real schedule.
Start with coffee at Muddy Goose, where a crescent with your latte is worth trying. For something sweet, stop at The Donut Haus for warm donuts and house-roasted coffee.
If you're looking for a bigger breakfast, The Breakfast Club is a good choice when you want a substantial meal and nowhere else you need to be immediately afterward.
Then take your coffee outside at Cox Arboretum MetroPark and enjoy the leaves underfoot.
Fall is a good excuse to slow down a little.
Where to Eat on a Fall Day
Cooler temperatures also make patio dinners, cozy restaurants and local comfort food especially appealing.
For dinner, Meadowlark offers cozy, from-scratch cooking that fits the season perfectly.
If you're looking for a patio, Warped Wing Barrel Room & Smokery is a good place to settle in with smoky bites and a fire when sweater weather arrives.
For dessert, grab a slice from Elé Cake Co. and enjoy a slower evening.
And when you're looking for live music, Yellow Cab Tavern is a local favorite for bands, a good crowd and an evening that doesn't need to end early.
Fall Activities to Do With Kids
Fall weekends can be easier when you already know where you're going.
For a family outing, Windmill Farm Market offers its muddy adventure hayride, while Indian Riffle Park gives kids plenty of room to play and explore.
If you need a sweet treat afterward, stop for a frosted buttercream cookie from Cheryl’s Cookies.
Have a dog joining the adventure? The Dog Park at Oak Grove Park has two fenced acres where your pup can run.
You can also build a simple fall Saturday around a pumpkin patch, playground, local bakery and a walk through the leaves. It doesn't have to be complicated to be memorable.
What to Show Someone Visiting Dayton
If you're hosting friends or family from out of town, there are a few places that belong on the short list.
Start at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, where hundreds of aircraft make it easy to spend an entire afternoon exploring. Admission is free, making it an especially easy recommendation for visitors.
For a true Dayton experience, stop for pizza at Marion's Piazza. Dayton-style thin-crust, square-cut pizza is one of those local foods visitors should experience at least once.
For a view, head to Lookout Point at Woodland Cemetery, Dayton's highest point and a beautiful place to see the city framed by fall color.
And for a piece of Dayton history, visit Carillon Historical Park, where you can see the Wright brothers' actual 1905 airplane.
